Artist Spotlight
Krstina K is a Grade 12, visual arts student at John G. Diefenbaker High School. They are a traditional visual artist and although they use digital art as a tool to aid their process, they stick to familiar mediums such as watercolour, acrylic, pencil crayon, and graphite. Krstina has been involved in the Arts for basically all their life, but it really became a serious passion of theirs in Middle School. They have developed their skills through classes, as well as YouTube. Krstina derives much of their inspiration from observation and their experiences, as well as other creatives and artists. They channel their life and the world around them into their art. Krstina often incorporates their love of animals, specifically Canadian wildlife into their artwork. Art is extremely important to Krstina because it has provided them with an outlet for their emotions. Krstina appreciates the flexibility of the Visual Arts, and loves to exercise and expand their imagination through their practice. Art makes them feel that they have become a more observant person, able to actively view life around them. Most of all, however, art has helped Krstina to develop a more positive outlook on life. They get discouraged at times, looking at other artists' works, but they find that they derive much pride from their own work and the clear progression of their skills that they can see in it. In their own words: “It's something that doesn't judge me; it's a place to be safe. It is also a way for me to connect with people directly and indirectly. It's a pathway to make friends and share opinions with others through viewing others' work and them viewing mine.” Krstina plans to keep Art a vital part of their life. They plan to pursue Art as a career, whether as a Facilitator of the Arts, or as a Freelance Artist (eventually). Their love of Art has been strengthened and stoked by the support of their community, friends, school, and family. They hope to further progress in the Arts and pursue professional art training at the Alberta University of the Arts.
Biology Zoo Field Trip
This semester, our Biology 20 and Biology IB classes had the opportunity to visit the Calgary Zoo. While at the zoo, students participated in an Edutrek Tour where they learned about predator-prey relationships, adaptations, conservation efforts and other interesting facts about the zoo residents. It was an exciting opportunity for teachers too as the Zoo Expert and tour guide was a Diefenbaker graduate! Their field trips were sponsored by The Wilder Academy and their sponsors Pivotal Energy and we thank them for the opportunity.
DTFI Student Creation

Summer Activities NOT appropriate for school
Around this time of year students forget that school is neither the time nor place for games and activities associated with summer and outside of school. While the activities are fun and appear to be harmless, many activities such as water fights, beach clothing, rough housing and stunting in cars are not appropriate for school at any time. Any student engaging in these activities will be asked to stop immediately, may have their items confiscated for parental pick up and could be subject to discipline up to and including suspension or expulsion. Please don’t risk a great year for something that can wait until you are at home or summer holidays begin.
