Traffic Safety
Ensuring our students get to school safely is everyone’s responsibility. Please be mindful of crosswalks, parking rules and speed limits when you are near our schools, especially during the morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.
Traffic Safety Reminders from The City of Calgary
The City wants to remind and encourage anyone who is driving children to school to operate their vehicles safely and responsibly. Parents and guardians are reminded not to park where it’s prohibited during drop off and pick up times, such as blocking crosswalks, laneways and private driveways.
Pick up and drop off times can get quite busy. Give yourself extra time to navigate safely around schools, whether you are walking, wheeling, or driving. For those who drive, help alleviate congestion by parking a block or two away and walking in, wherever possible.
Talk to your kids about safe travel practices like using crosswalks with patrols, looking all ways before crossing the street and not jaywalking across the roadways as a shortcut.

Morning Student Drop off
There are two locations for student drop off. If you enter from 4th St (south entrance to the student parking lot), please drop off your student at the front of the school and exit via the north entrance close to McDonald’s (right turns only out of the parking lot).
If you enter from the north entrance (closest to McDonald’s) of 4th St, please head east through the parking lot and drop off your student by the 2 large orange pylons. Continue east and exit via the north exit towards the Superstore.
If you enter from the north entrance, please head west through the parking lot and drop off your student by the 2 large orange candlestick pylons. Continue West and exit via the north entrance close to McDonald’s (right turns only out of the parking lot).
After School Student Pick up
Please do not park in staff parking. Some parents may arrange and meet their students for a quick drive- by pickup at the front of the school. Stopping and waiting for your student in front of the school should not be permitted. Alternatively, please wait for your student at the Superstore parking lot where there is much more space and more points of exit.
Student Parking
Student parking is available in the student lot, on the south side of the school. Students must purchase (from the Business Office) and display a vehicle parking tag. Vehicles parked without a valid parking tag may be ticketed.
Student Parking Passes
We have a student parking lot at John G. Diefenbaker High School, but it is still limited and as such, students wanting to park on the school property are required to complete an application.
To be considered eligible for a parking pass, students making application must:
- hold a Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License at time of application
- have paid their school fees through the Business Office or online at time of application
Parking Spot Rental
Please fill out the Parking Application starts on August 29.
To complete your application, please bring your driver’s license and payment of $50.00 to the Business Office and pick up your parking pass.
