Speech Tournament on September 27
Coaches Mrs. Wright and Mrs. Hayward were excited to host almost 400 people from 14 schools (including parent judges) here at Diefenbaker this past Friday. Hannah L. performed very well, although she faced some stiff competition in her category of Impromptu. Overall, a successful night of Speech Competition was had! The coaches would like to send a special thank you to the caretaking team for doing such a great job of setting up and taking down the event, and Ms. Turner, for her help and participation in the evening.

Updates from IB: IB Learner Profile Contest
Our first two winners of the IB Learner Profile Contest have been drawn. Congratulations to Aryan S. and Zubair Y. for demonstrating the Learner Profile Attribute of Risk Taker!
October’s focus will be on the Learner Profile of “Inquirer”. These are students who nurture their curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. They know how to learn independently with others. Inquirers learn with enthusiasm and sustain their love of learning throughout life.
Entries to this month’s contest are due October 18. Students can enter through the form on D2L. Parents who wish to nominate their child can email Ms. Ulanicki at tjulanicki@cbe.ab.ca.
IB Exam Fees
Students registered in a 30-level IB course are registered to write an IB exam in April or May 2025. Fees for IB exams have been added to your child’s MyCBE account. Payment is due by November 15. If your child is registered in three or four IB exams and you require a different schedule for payment of fees, please contact Ms Ulanicki at tjulanicki@cbe.ab.ca to arrange this. The final date to withdraw from an IB exam is October 31st. Any students registered in an exam level course following this date will be responsible for the $200 exam fee.
Artist Showcase
In Art 20 we strive to expose students to the various art movements from throughout history. The Program of Studies also encourages students to explore various references and mediums, with a specific focus on technology. For this assignment we discuss all of these outcomes through Pop Art.
Pop Art is an Art Movement that emerged in the United Kingdom and the United States during the mid- to late-1950s. The movement presented a challenge to traditions of Fine Art by including imagery from popular and mass culture, such as advertising, comic books and mundane cultural objects. The work is characterized by bright, bold colour fields and commonplace subjects.
Senior Sunrise
This year, as a new initiative for our Grade 12 students, Brianna P. organized and posted an invite to all our JGD Grade 12 students to participate in yesterday’s Senior Sunrise. Brianna saw this as an opportunity to bring the Grade 12 class together to strengthen their connection as a graduating cohort of students. While she spread the word through friends and an Instagram account, she did not expect the exceptional turnout that occurred. Over 50 of our almost 400 Grade 12s met on the back field on the hill shortly after 7:00 a.m. What an amazing turnout! Brianna is also planning a Senior Sunset gathering later this month. Her goal is to get all the Grade 12s together through this initiative. Stay tuned for further updates.
