Hallowe’en Dress Up Day and Expectations

Hallowe’en is always a fun day at schools.  There will be activities to celebrate the day. Please remember that we are a school and costumes and accessories need to be school appropriate.  Accessories such as replica knives, swords, scythes or guns will not be allowed and will be confiscated and then returned at the end of the school day.  While some students may wear fake blood, please no spraying of fake blood or other liquids within the school.  On Friday, November 1, we ask that students throw their wrappers in garbage cans to keep our school clean. Happy Hallowe’en!!

On Friday, October 18 and Saturday, October 19, we had 14 of our JGD students participate in the first Model United Nations at Sir Winston Churchill for the first of our city-wide conferences this year. After this amazing event, the students met at after school on Wednesday and the team has already grown by at least three.  These are super keen students who are now fully motivated to be part of this outstanding global citizen student group for the remainder of the year.

Model United Nations is the simulation of the world's largest international organization, providing students with the opportunity to discuss and debate on the problems that plague our current society and shape the lives of citizens around the globe. Students from high schools across the city meet at conferences, where they are responsible for representing the interests and perspectives of their chosen country within a committee. Model UN promotes the development of skills that will be essential for success later in life, requiring careful research, diplomacy, public speaking, and critical thinking. Most of all, Model UN fosters the same tenacity, passion, and drive for positive change seen from leaders that work tirelessly to change the world for the better. If students are interested, Model UN is held after school every Wednesday from 3:30-5:00 in Room 233.  We have two upcoming conferences, where you can meet others and learn the process of negotiating with your country.

Leadership Conference

On October 24 Diefenbaker Leadership student had the chance to go to Calgary's bi-annual Horizon Leadership Conference. They were able to share the different activities they do to impact our school culture at JGD with students from around the city to gather ideas about what other schools do as well. They also attended a Keynote Speaker, the famous Ian Tyson, who spoke to them about kindness and how to be Silver Lining Prospectors in the leadership world. JGD students returned from the conference highly motivated and ready to go!
