Ramadan Mubarak!!
Many of our students are celebrating and observing Ramadan which began on February 28. To support their right to follow their faith, following CBE Administrative Regulation 3067, and in consultation with our Muslim Students Association, we will be offering a prayer space at the beginning of Duhr on school days Mondays to Thursdays. Students will be expected to leave class on time, follow their cultural expectations, complete their prayers, and return to class within a 20 minute window of time. The prayer space will be supervised and only available from March 17 - 20 at 1:40 - 2:00.
Teachers also may be covering important instruction or assessments during these times and it may not be possible for students to miss classes as a result. Students need to talk to their teachers ahead of time to discuss anything they may miss while they are out of class.

Forum for Young Canadians National Summit in Ottawa
Madison L. is one of our Grade 10 students and she spent a week in Ottawa learning about our political system. When she returned, she agreed to share with our Dief Community a bit about her experience. This is what she wrote:
I had the privilege of spending last week with approximately 99 other peers aged 14-18 from all the provinces and territories (unfortunately except for Newfoundland and Labrador). Now I don’t know what security at a G7 Summit is like, but the Young Canadians National Summit security was very tight - and yes, many of us were experiencing cell phone withdrawal.
Some key highlights included having guided tours of the Supreme Court, House of Commons, and the Senate, and even getting the chance to sit in the MPs’ and Senators’ chairs. The rest of our days were filled with simulations replicating the election process, finance ministry, or Indigenous’ Treaty negotiations. Presenters and panelists like Deputy Secretary for Artificial Intelligence Mark Schaan and Chief of Protocol Sébastien Carrière were faced with tough questions from us! This was such an interesting week to be in Ottawa considering the very unstable political climate, and although Parliament was not in session, The Honourable Mike Lake, The Honourable Yasir Naqvi and Senator Peter Harder made appearances and shared with us interesting insights on many topics like autism awareness, maintaining Canadian sovereignty, and breaking down the difficult parts of their jobs. Most evenings, we took off our poli-sci hats and let loose playing 80s arcade games and pinball.
The best part of this experience was meeting engaged and passionate youth from across the country who come from all different backgrounds. There were students representing all the provinces and territories, from both urban and rural areas, Anglophones and Francophones, and of diverse ethnicities. I had met an entrepreneurial 18 year old from Windsor, Ontario who is currently in his fourth year of university, had AI internships, and currently works in a battery research lab. I also met a 14 year old from Victoria who is a 6th generation Indian Canadian. The list of interesting people goes on - and no, I did not meet Justin Trudeau or Mark Carney, I believe they had more pressing issues.
The week concluded with a lovely closing reception at the National Arts Center where the 28th Governor General David Johnston shared his advice on being a good leader and had a few book recommendations (he recommends The Second Mountain: A Quest for Moral Life by David Brooks). All in all, this was an unforgettable experience, and I’ve made lasting connections with people from all over the country, not to mention gaining perspective and insight upon the inner workings of Canadian civics. This opportunity was funded by the Rideau Hall Foundation.
