Precautions for the Solar Eclipse on Monday, April 8

On Monday, April 8 a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Calgary. The solar event will begin just before noon and conclude by 2:00 p.m., with the maximum coverage occurring at 12:43 p.m.

We know that this provides a unique learning experience for students and staff in our schools; however, there can be serious impacts to vision as a result of viewing the eclipse in an unsafe manner.

During this partial solar eclipse on Monday, we would like to invite all students to remain at school during the lunch break. Please send a lunch with your child. If students are not participating in educational activities around the event, schools may choose to have students involved in supervised indoor activities.

If you decide that your child will walk home for lunch on Monday, please discuss with your child not to look at the sun to protect his/her eyes from damage by the solar eclipse.

During a solar eclipse, looking directly at the sun is dangerous. Safe viewing of the eclipse requires wearing specialized glasses or watching through a telescope or solar binoculars that have specialized lenses and should only be performed under the direction of a professional.

For more safety information can be found on the NASA website or from the Canadian Association of Optometrists.  If you have further questions, please contact your school office.

Artist Spotlight

Markus S. is a Grade 12 student with a passion for repainting dolls. He has been drawing since Grade 6, and began repainting dolls as of January that year. While quickly improving with each doll, Markus is inspired by seeing other artists doing similar works. He strives for the best quality and techniques to express his own personal art style.

Painting dolls and drawing is an outlet for his inner emotions and interests. Previously, Markus has had an artist showcase dedicated to him for his drawings but not his dolls. His process or technique is to “just go for it”. He finds he does best when he doesn’t plan ahead and fixes things along the way. For bigger and more specific projects, there is planning involved. Markus is interested in fashion and makeup artistry; wanting to keep art in his life forever. He doesn’t have a plan for which path to take, but wants to stay in the realm of art, fashion design and/or makeup artistry.

Markus has an Instagram account for his custom dolls that you are encouraged to seek out. He is an incredible artist and creates amazing works of art each and every time.
